In response to the public health crisis of breast cancer, the Breast Cancer Fund identifies – and advocates for elimination of – the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. Founded in 1992, the Breast Cancer Fund works from the knowledge that breast cancer is not simply a personal tragedy, but a public health priority that demands action from all.
Today, a woman's lifetime risk of breast cancer is more than 1 in 8. Not only can you use the Santa Barbra Wine Country Half to challenge yourself physically and improve your health, you can also use it to help lessen these odds.
The organizers of the Santa Barbara Wine Country Half are donating $2 from your registration fee to the Breast Cancer Fund. But did you know that you can do more? Participants are encouraged to do additional fundraising with this program. To help make it easy, you can fundraise online.
Sign up at www.breastcancerfund.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=252368 to create your personal online fundraising page, and simply download your list of contacts to email a donation link to friends and family. Fundraise as an individual or as a team. Breast Cancer Fund will track your donations and give a total amount raised for you on the day of the race. Incentive prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers! Collecting cash and checks is fine too. Please make sure that checks are written out to Breast Cancer Fund and sent in batches to: Breast Cancer Fund, 1388 Sutter Street, Ste. 400, San Francisco, CA 94109, Attn: Julie Homan.
Breast cancer rates are rising at an alarming pace. When all known risk factors are added together, including family history and genetics, more than 50 percent of all breast cancer cases remain unexplained. Powerful evidence suggests that environmental exposures, including cosmetics, pesticides, cleaning products, fuels and plastics, may trigger the development of breast cancer. This is why the Breast Cancer Fund has adopted the bold mission to identify and to advocate for the elimination of the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease.
